For the first issue of IRENE magazine, we interviewed Ann Hanlon for our first monthly “Ask a Librarian” feature. Hanlon is a Digital Projects Librarian at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (see here for more on Hanlon).

IRENE MAGAZINE: How do you put your books in the right order?

ANN HANLON: It can be sort of complicated, in fact! There are two ways to put books in order in a library:

Using the Dewey Decimal System
Using the Library of Congress Classification System

Both are based on ordering the books according to what they are about. So, all the books about outer space are together, all the books about ballet are together, etc.

And it’s based on assigning letters and numbers to represent certain subjects. So, astronomy is “QB” according to the Library of Congress, and “520” according to Dewey.

IM: So where would kids books be?

AH: All the kids books go to the children’s section of the library, and THEN get their Dewey Decimal classification. So there is “Item Location” information added to the book information. For example:

AUTHOR Branley, Franklyn Mansfield, 1915-2002.
TITLE What makes day and night / Franklyn M. Branley ; illustrated by Arthur Dorros.
PUBLISHER New York : Harper & Row, 1986. Edition Rev. ed., 1st Harper Trophy ed.
